INSTRUCTORS

Miriam Beyer (owner/director)

In her youth, Miriam studied Ballet and Pointe at the Annabelle Timms Ballet Academy in Bridgeport, West Virgina.  As part of her dance training, Miriam also studied Jazz, Tap and Theatre Dance throughout her youth.  Following high school, Miriam received a dance scholarship to study at Ohio University where she studied Modern Dance and Ballet.  She finished out her college education at West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Science degree,where she was also a member of the WVU Ballet Ensemble and the Theatre Dance Company.  In addition, Miriam studied dance under the direction of the Pittsburgh Ballet Company.  Upon coming to the Outer Banks in the late 1980’s, Miriam was hired by Sophia Sharp (the original owner of Island Dance which opened in 1979) to teach Ballet.  After teaching for ten years, Miriam became the Director which later led to her becoming Owner/Director of the studio which is now known as Island School of Dance.

Sara Hallas

Sara began studying dance under Kathi Halbert at Kathi’s Dance and Gym Center in Poland, Ohio.  She was active in many areas of dance, starting with Tap and including Jazz, Ballet, and Pointe.  She went on to continue dancing with the Wittenberg University Dance Company in Springfield, Ohio, where she earned a Dance minor studying Tap, Jazz, Ballet, and Modern.  Sara graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2004.

Sarah Woodley

Sarah was born and raised in High Point, NC.  She started dancing at Sharon Maness Dance Center then continued her training at High Point Ballet throughout middle and high school.  Sarah also went to Weaver Academy of Performing Arts for dance then trained from 2010 - 2014 at UNC School of the Arts, majoring in Contemporary Dance.  While there she continued her training in modern, ballet, and choreography and performed for the School.  In addition, Sarah performed in pieces by Doug Elkins and Friends, Juel D. Lane, Brenda Daniels, Larry Keigwin, Sean Sullivan, Merce Cunningham, and Shen Wei Dance Arts.  She has also trained and performed company pieces in Chicago, New York, Seattle, and Australia.
